It was a moment of hope and renewed commitment at the Casa De Lucy Hotel in Gudu, Abuja, as stakeholders, educators, and advocates gathered for a groundbreaking three-day training on inclusive education for students with albinism in Nigeria.

The event, funded by the Disability Rights Fund (DRF), brought together teachers, ministry officials, and civil society representatives from across the country to advance educational inclusion for a group that has long faced systemic discrimination and neglect. In her opening remarks, Dr. Mrs. Bisi Bamishe, Executive Director of the Albinism Association of Nigeria, expressed gratitude to God and commended the Disability Rights Fund for its continued partnership. “Your unwavering support has made this vision a reality,”she said. “We are here today because of your belief in the potential of every child, regardless of skin or sight.”

Dr. Bamishe also acknowledged the contributions of her team, consultants, and the Federal Ministry of Education, highlighting the years of advocacy that led to this moment. She noted that students with albinism often grapple with discrimination, poor vision, stigmatization, and bullying barriers that can severely hinder academic performance. “This training is not just a program. It is a movement. We are launching a specialized training manual for teachers a tool we believe will change lives,” Dr. Bamishe emphasized.

She urged participants to take the lessons learned beyond the walls of the training hall and into their classrooms and communities. “This is about transformation. Let’s work together to create schools where students with albinism and all students with disabilities can thrive,” she said.

The Executive Director concluded by appreciating all attendees, both in person and online for their commitment to inclusion. Special mention was given to the DRF Program Officer for West Africa, Mr. Theo Odaudu, for his presence and support.

The training continues through April 11, with sessions focusing on practical strategies for inclusive teaching, understanding the specific needs of students with albinism, and fostering safe, supportive learning environments.
