Kano, Nigeria – July 10, 2025
The Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN), Kano State Chapter, in partnership with the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) and CeraVe, a leading skincare brand developed with dermatologists, successfully commemorated the 2025 World Skin Health Day with a week-long series of medical outreach and awareness activities across Kano State.
Held from June 26 to July 8, 2025, the event provided free skin consultations, treatment, and medications to over 900 people, including more than 40 pe
rsons with albinism from various communities in Gezawa, Kumbotso, and Tarauni Local Government Areas. Participants also received free sunscreen lotion and practical guidance on sun protection and daily skin care.
The initiative began with a live awareness program on Arewa 24 TV, featuring Hajiya Mariya Ishaka, Vice President of AAN, and Dr. Faiza from the AKTH Dermatology Department. Discussions centered on the importance of maintaining healthy skin, early diagnosis, and preventive care.
Speaking on behalf of AAN, Hajiya Mariya Ishaka commended the partnership and the impact of the campaign, stating:
“The program was a very welcome idea and of great benefit to the albinism community. Many of our members received treatment, referrals, and vital education on how to protect themselves from harmful sun rays. We look forward to more of such opportunities in the future.”
The week concluded with an advocacy road walk from Nasarawa Specialist Hospital to the Kano State Ministry of Health, where AAN leaders and medical teams paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Health. The Association emphasized the need for greater government attention to skin health and inclusive healthcare policies for vulnerable groups.
The event reinforced AAN’s commitment to promoting inclusive healthcare, sun safety, and the well-being of persons with albinism across Nigeria.
